Statement of Intent

At Leigh Academy Minster, our Geography curriculum supports the mission “Where ambition takes flight” by developing confident, reflective, and principled communicators.

Aligned with the IB MYP, we teach students about global change and how to respond to it.  While grounding learning in the local identity of the Isle of Sheppey and the national identity of the UK.

Our curriculum reflects the academy’s values of Ambition, Character, Achievement, and Responsibility, fostering learners who are not only academically successful but also socially aware and locally rooted.

Geography is about exploring and understanding both the natural and human world we live in. It covers a broad range of themes and topics, always looking at how our actions interact with and thus change and shape the planet we all call home.

We look to prepare our students to be the leaders meeting the challenges that the planet and the human race faces in their futures.

From Year 7 onwards we will be exploring natural and human processes of change and how they shape the planet we live on. Topics studied in Year 7, 8 and 9 help build a sense of global wonder before pupils start the GCSE programme of study in Year 10. This is then an option subject to continue further into Years 10 and 12.

The breadth and depth of the Geography curriculum will ensure that students have all skills and knowledge essential for success. By the end of their journey in the subject students will be able to complete the following:

– Have detailed knowledge on key processes that form our physical environment

– Developed an awareness of our ever changing urban environments

– Knowledge on how our actions shape our world, positively and negatively with potential solutions

– Develop analytical skills and interpretation of a wide number of sources

– Develop both literacy and numeracy skills, which are essential for success at all key stages

– Ability to collect geographical data in the field and interpret their findings

– Engagement with the MYP learner profile, providing them with skills in context of the wider world.

Geography is a diverse subject by its nature. We will implement this by an inclusive curriculum for all students. The impact of studying Geography at LAM will be that students learn to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, championing diversity in all the units of study of current and wider global issues. Furthermore, the use of UDL strategies in Geography allow students to access the curriculum in a way that means they will be able to learn in a way that best suits them, creating an environment where all students can make progress.

All students studying Geography  will have the opportunity to engage with fieldwork. These range from on site activities, local day trips to abroad trips in places such as Iceland and Naples.

Our curriculum is constantly reviewed to not only ensure that the needs of all students are met, but to ensure that students are educated about the most recent geographical issues.
