Samuel Franklin Cody

Cody College is named after Samuel Cody, a pioneering aviator whose innovation and ambition helped shape British aviation history.  Born in March 1867 in Iowa, USA, he came to Europe in 1890 with a Wild West Act before his fascination for kites led to him taking off for the first powered flight in the UK.

In the early 1900’s he became a founding member of the Aero Club which established one of the first aerodromes on the Isle of Sheppey.  He worked extensively on the island to investigate aerospace engineering and was based at the Sheerness Balloon School.

Welcome from Head of College

Our Small School College model is at the heart of Leigh Academy Minster’s ethos and values, designed specifically to provide a high quality supportive environment where every student feels known, valued, and empowered to succeed. Within Cody College, your child will benefit from dedicated pastoral care, a strong sense of belonging, and personalised support that underpins their academic journey. Our aim is to foster an atmosphere where students feel safe, happy, and ready to embrace every learning opportunity that our academy offers.

The courage, vision and unrelenting pursuit of progress shown by our namesake, Samuel Franklin Cody, serve as daily inspiration for our students.  In that spirit, Cody College provides a rigorous academic education while nurturing the character and values that will prepare our learners to become leaders of the future.

I am both excited and proud to continue working with our students, families, and dedicated staff team and to have the privilege of seeing first-hand, the incredible potential of our Cody students – how they rise to challenges, celebrate success and grow in confidence over the year. It reaffirms my belief that when students feel supported, challenged and encouraged to lead, they thrive.

At the heart of Cody College is our belief in nurturing INNOVATORS – a set of values that spell out who we are and what we strive to develop in every student:

  • Independent in thought and learning
  • Nurturing to others and themselves
  • Naturally Curious, always asking questions
  • Open-minded and accepting of diverse perspectives
  • Visionaries who see beyond the present
  • Articulate in expressing ideas and opinions
  • Trustworthy and reliable in their actions
  • Optimistic about their potential and the future
  • Resilient in the face of challenge
  • Self-disciplined in managing learning and conduct

We aim to develop not only academic excellence but also strong, principled young adults with the confidence to shape their own paths. These values will be woven into your child’s daily experience at Cody College – from the classroom to co-curricular opportunities and wider academy life. We do this through a comprehensive tutor time programme and a dedicated team of leaders and support staff.

In Cody College we understand the important link between the academy, college and home, and it is for this reason that families benefit from a dedicated college office for their child.

Our vision for Cody College this academic year is simple but powerful:

To ensure that every student feels empowered to succeed – academically, socially, and personally – through high expectations, strong relationships, and meaningful opportunities.

We will continue to place character education at the centre of our work, aligning all we do with our INNOVATOR values. From academic excellence and leadership development to resilience in the face of challenge, we are committed to developing well-rounded, future-ready young people who make a positive impact in their community and beyond.
