WRIGHT COLLEGE
The Wright Brothers
Wright College is named after Orville and Wilbur Wright, who are credited with inventing, building and flying the world’s first successful aeroplane.
The brothers were born in America in 1867 (Orville) and 1871 (Wilbur) and gained their mechanical skills working with printing presses, bicycles, motors and other machinery.
In 1900 the brothers began experimenting with manned gliders and in 1903 they built the first powered aircraft. In December 1903 they made the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The brothers commissioned the Short Brothers to set up the first British aircraft factory on the Isle of Sheppey to build their aeroplanes.
