Johnson College
Amy Johnson
Johnson College is named after Amy Johnson, who was a pioneering English aviator. Born in Yorkshire in July 1903, Amy was initially introduced to flying as a hobby.
On 6th July 1929 she gained her pilot’s ‘A’ licence and less than a year later, in June 1930, she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia.
In January 1941 while flying for the Air Transport Auxiliary, Amy’s plane crashed into the sea close to the Isle of Sheppey.
