Hilda Hewlett

Hewlett College is named after Hilda Beatrice Hewlett, who in August 1911, defied expectations to become the first British woman to earn a pilot’s licence.

Born on 17th February 1864, Hewlett, also known as Billy, became interested in motoring and mechanics in 1905 entering a number of driving competitions.

In 1909 Hewlett attended her first aviation meeting and in the summer of 1910, in partnership with Gustave Blondeau, she opened the first flying school in the UK.

To supplement the income from the flying school Hewlett and Blondeau started an aircraft manufacturing business which was managed by Hewlett herself.

Welcome from Head of College

Our Small School College model is at the heart of Leigh Academy Minster’s ethos and values, designed specifically to provide a high quality supportive environment where every student feels known, valued, and empowered to succeed. Within Hewlett College, your child will benefit from dedicated pastoral care, a strong sense of belonging, and personalised support that underpins their academic journey. Our aim is to foster an atmosphere where students feel safe, happy, and ready to embrace every learning opportunity that our academy offers.

In Hewlett College we recognise the achievements of Hilda Hewlett and encourage our students to be internationally minded pioneers, who are resilient, entrepreneurial and committed to fostering a thriving global community.

These values underpin every action we take and the decisions we make in supporting your child in accessing a comprehensive high quality education.  We do this through a comprehensive tutor time programme and a dedicated team of leaders and support staff.

In Hewlett College we understand the important link between the academy, college and home, and it is for this reason that families benefit from a dedicated college office for their child.
